Oahu Self-guided Kayak Adventure Features
Kane'ohe Bay
Nestled on the eastern shore of Oahu, Kane'ohe Bay is a true aquatic paradise. This stunning natural wonder, famous for its clear turquoise water, is the largest sheltered body of water in the Hawaiian Islands, providing a safe haven for an impressive array of marine life. The bay's barrier reef, the only one of its kind in Hawaii, plays a crucial role in maintaining the calm conditions that are perfect for kayaking and snorkeling. The captivating beauty of Kane'ohe Bay extends beyond its waters, with the majestic Koolau Mountain Range and the famed Coconut Island framing its shores.
Coconut Island
Coconut Island, or "Moku o Loe", is a captivating little gem in the middle of Kane'ohe Bay, radiating with tropical charm. Known widely as "Gilligan's Island" due to its cameo in the popular 1960s television show, this island is more than just a visual delight. It's a thriving center for marine research operated by the University of Hawaii’s Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology. While visitors aren't permitted to set foot on the island, kayaking around its perimeter provides an opportunity to witness its stunning natural beauty and intriguing biodiversity.
The Kane’ohe Sandbar
The Kane’ohe Sandbar, a natural marvel, is a must-visit while kayaking in Kane'ohe Bay. This unique formation is a large patch of fine, white sand that appears at low tide, essentially forming a beach in the middle of the ocean. It's an extraordinary place where you can disembark from your kayak, relax, and immerse yourself in the panoramic views of the surrounding turquoise waters and distant mountains. The shallow, clear waters around the sandbar teem with marine life, offering an excellent opportunity to spot a variety of tropical fish. Be sure to time your visit according to the tide charts, as the sandbar is fully submerged during high tide.
