Big Island Volcano Tour From Oahu And Maui Features
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a unique and captivating marvel of nature, offering a surreal journey into Earth's volcanic history. Housing Kīlauea - one of the world's most active volcanoes - the park has a dynamic landscape exhibiting the primal process of creation and destruction. Visitors are treated to a unique spectacle of seething lava lakes, billowing steam vents, and craggy craters. The park also hosts an information center where you can learn about the volcanic processes, the island's geology, and its unique flora and fauna. With stunning hiking trails and panoramic views, the Volcanoes National Park is undeniably the beating heart of the Big Island.
Hawaii’s Volcanic History
Hawaii's volcanic history is a fascinating and evolving narrative that dates back thousands of years. The islands are part of a volcanic chain created by the Pacific Plate moving over a hotspot of molten rock that welled up from deep within the Earth's mantle. As the plate moves, new volcanoes are formed, creating a chain of islands. The youngest of these is the Big Island, home to Kīlauea and Mauna Loa, two of the world's most active volcanoes. Kīlauea's recent eruptions have shaped the island's landscapes, creating new land and altering existing terrain. This dynamic process of creation and destruction makes Hawaii a unique place to explore the raw power and beauty of nature's forces.
The Big Island Is Growing
The Big Island is actually still growing! This growth is primarily due to the continuous activity of the Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. These volcanoes extrude molten lava, which, upon reaching the ocean, rapidly cools and solidifies, adding new land to the island's coastline. This remarkable process, known as the creation of lava deltas, contributes to the Big Island's annual expansion. It's a phenomenon that not only increases the island's landmass but also provides scientists with a unique opportunity to observe firsthand how islands evolve and landscapes transform.
